Self-Organization applied to Dynamic Network Layout

چکیده

As networks and their structure have become a major field of research, a strong demand to visualize these networks has emerged. We address this challenge by formalizing the well established spring layout in terms of dynamic equations. We thus opening up the design space for new algorithms. Drawing from the knowledge of systems design, we derive a layout algorithm that remedies several drawbacks of the original spring layout. This new algorithm relies on the balancing of two antagonistic forces. We thus call it arf for “attractive and repulsive forces”. It is, as we claim, particularly suited for dynamic layout of smaller networks (n < 10). We back this claim with several application examples from ongoing complex systems research.

A New Optimization via Invasive Weeds Algorithm for Dynamic Facility Layout Problem

The dynamic facility layout problem (DFLP) is the problem of finding positions of departments onthe plant floor for multiple periods (material flows between departments change during the planning horizon)such that departments do not overlap, and the sum of the material handling and rearrangement costs isminimized. In this paper a new optimization algorithm inspired from colonizing weeds, Invasi...

Self-Organizing Graphs - A Neural Network Perspective of Graph Layout

The paper presents self-organizing graphs, a novel approach to graph layout based on a competitive learning algorithm. This method is an extension of self-organization strategies known from unsupervised neural networks, namely from Kohonen's self-organizing map. Its main advantage is that it is very exibly adaptable to arbitrary types of visualization spaces, for it is explicitly parameterized ...

Applying Genetic Algorithm to Dynamic Layout Problem

In today’s economy, manufacturing plants must be able to operate efficiently and respond quickly to changes in the product mix and demand.[1] Layout design has a significant impact on manufacturing efficiency. Initially, it was treated as a static decision but due to improvements in technology, it is possible to rearrange the manufacturing facilities in different scenarios. The Plant layout...

Modeling Cortical Plasticity Based on Adapting Lateral Interaction

A neural network model called LISSOM for the cooperative self-organization of a erent and lateral connections in cortical maps is applied to modeling cortical plasticity. After self-organization, the LISSOM maps are in a dynamic equilibrium with the input, and reorganize like the cortex in response to simulated cortical lesions and intracortical microstimulation. The model predicts that adaptin...

Self-Organization and Segmentation with Laterally Connected Spiking Neurons

A self-organizing model of spiking neurons wi th dynamic thresholds and lateral excitatory and inhibitory connections is presented and tested in the image segmentation task. The model integrates two previously separate lines of research in modeling the visual cortex. Laterally connected self-organizing maps have been used to model how afferent structures and lateral connections could self-organ...
